It is committed to the future of this community, of more than 3,800 people in the Village incorporated limits and more than 14,000 people total, in the 43558 zip code. Honoring the past, committed to the future.
BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
As part of the Toledo metropolitan area, Swanton offers the best of both worlds. Residents enjoy the conveniences and amenities of a larger city, while still relishing the charm and close-knit atmosphere of small-town living. The village offers a wide range of housing options and ample leisure and recreational activities for all to enjoy.
OUR HISTORY
Incorporated on February 19, 1883, the Village of Swanton takes its name from Swan Creek. With the establishment of the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern rail lines in the mid-1850s, Swanton began to grow rapidly. By 1903, the Toledo and Indiana Electric Railway further spurred development, running along Broadway and Main Street. As automobiles gained popularity in the early 1900s, Swanton’s growth continued.
OUR GOVERNMENT
Swanton operates as a general statutory village with an elected Mayor and Council. A full-time Village Administrator oversees day-to-day operations, ensuring high-quality services for our residents and the ongoing success of our community.
HONORING OUR HEROES
Swanton is home to the Spirit of the American Doughboy Statue, a gift from the Republic of France in recognition of the sacrifices made by Swanton’s servicemen during World War I. With one of the highest casualty rates of any U.S. town in World War I, Swanton takes great pride in this tribute. The statue was restored in 2014-2015 and proudly stands in Memorial Park on Main Street. In 2018, it was honored as part of the 100 Cities/100 Memorials initiative by the United States World War One Centennial Commission.
EDUCATION
The Village of Swanton is served by the Swanton Local School District, dedicated to providing quality education to the community's youth. Go Bulldogs!
